Introduction p.2

Sutton Movement
Writing began
with DanceWriting:

Stick figures
placed on a
five-line staff,
dance from
left to right.

DanceWriting uses
Full Body writing...

Historically,
SignWriting,
came next.

SignWriting
writes the
movements of
signed languages
around the world.

SignWriting began,
in 1974, using the
upper body of a
stick figure, but
today, in 2005,
Full Body writing
is not used in
SignWriting.

Occasionally
SignWriting
teachers might
use a stick figure
to teach young
children, or for
beginners, to give
them an idea of
how SignWriting
is constructed
but the stick figure
is taken away as
soon as the writer
becomes skilled.
